Potency in men from 40s and 50s?

I am trying to find data for potency returning in men 40 to 50 years old after RC.
I am looking for numbers related to those who are able to obtain it with no aid as well as those who do it with viagra etc. I have already watched the Sloan Kettering Video btw.
If you are in that group and wish to share your experience you may add me as a friend and send messages in private if not this thread.
Thank you.

    Guy,

    CLINICIAN’S CORNER
    Erectile Dysfunction Following Radical Prostatectomy
    Arthur L. Burnett, MD

    JAMA. 2005;293:2648-2653.

Following surgery in which the nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy technique is used, between 60% to 85% of men eventually recover erectile function. This constitutes a dramatic improvement over an earlier era, when postprostatectomy erectile dysfunction was the nearly universal rule.

. . . despite expert application of the nerve-sparing prostatectomy technique, early recovery of natural erectile function is uncommon. Many patients experience erectile dysfunction for as long as 2 years after the procedure, requiring the use of erectile aids for sexual activity during this period until natural erections recover.

Study by William Catalona, famed surgeon: 91% of men under 50 with bilateral nerve sparing had return to potency by 24 months post surgery. In their fifties, 82%. See here:

    http://books.google.com/books?id=EM-ElSmG5noC&pg=PA113&lpg=PA113&dq=erectil e+dysfunction+by+age+prostatectomy&source=bl&ots=6PT9snn_V1&sig=QZE4Z7vR-d- YxFOImXJunjCKqV0&hl=en&ei=mypGTNTuHoXXngfw8dz2Aw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=res ult&resnum=1&ved=0CBcQ6AEwADgU#

Skill of the surgeon is a VERY critical factor here, as is sexual function pre-surgery, and location and stage of cancer found during surgery.

Your odds are very favorable based solely on your age, but there are no guarantees.

45 now. 12 months post op. Starting to see little signs of him waking up. I’ve been using the bimix shots through Dr. Mullhall’s program. The shots work for me though getting the right “dose” can be a challenge.

I also have a Neo bladder that doesnt work and Intestinal blockages since RC also.A doctor told me 5% may get it up after RC if they are lucky.Good luck.Other than the above I am very healthy and active.

Today is the 2 year anniversary of my R/C (robotic with nerve sparing). About one and a half to two months post op, erections began coming back. My doc was a bit surprised that it was that fast and easy. It is however different then before. Not quite as hard and of course orgasm is “dry” and that seemed a bit odd at first but it does work.

May 2009 RC w/prostate capsule sparing. Age 50
Erections returned 6 months post op.
As sailorman said, not as firm (at first), and dry.
I find dry ejactulations quite painful, personally.

All this talk of Woody should have got Ginger’s attention by now!!

    Thank you Jim
may I ask do you have to use any kind of aid, pills or device?
What scares me is that from the point of surgery everything has a side affect, from permanent curvature from shots to blindness or deafness caused by the pills.

    gr256,

Following is a cut and paste of my response to a similar question a while back. Feel free to contact me privately if you want to discuss any of this. Good luck!

It’s very true that the quality of the surgeon and his nerve-sparing expertise is a critical part of whether or not you are able to regain sexual function. Here’s my story. Sorry if it’s a bit explicit, but it’s something that is a real issue and needs to be out in the open.
I had an RC with neobladder over two years ago. My doctor was (and is) fantastic, an excellent communicator. We had long and detailed discussions about incontinence and impotence prior to the surgery. He understood that sex was important to me but saving my life was more important. He utilized all available nerve-sparing techniques during surgery, and put together an aggressive plan to regain sexual function post-surgery.
He prescribed one tablet of Viagra a day whether we were attempting sex or not. He also recommended frequent masturbation and attempting sex as often as we felt comfortable, even if it didn’t “work” completely.
This program worked pretty well, and I was able to achieve an erection capable of penetration within six weeks, although I had problems sustaining and it was no way equal to the quality of erection pre-surgery. It became frustrating and unsatisfying, and I went back and asked for some help. At about seven months I tried the penile suppository, MUSE, which was quite painful and only marginally improved erection quality, even at maximum dose of 1000mcg. After discussing with my doctor, we discontinued and started talking about the shot.
I was actually in his office for the test shot when he mentioned the penis pump. This prescription device is very similar to the pumps sold in adult shops for enlargement, but medical quality. They made an appointment for me with a representative of the company, TIMM, that makes the device, called Erec-Aid. He helped me demonstrate the device on myself to make sure I knew how to use it, telling me that 95% of the people who say the device doesn’t work for them don’t use it correctly.
You use this thing two ways. First, it is a training device. Every day (for me right before a shower) you give yourself three stong erections and hold them each for a few minutes, the more and the longer the better. This simulates the natural three erections that men have on average while sleeping, which you don’t have any more after RC. I did this every day for a few weeks, and noticed a huge improvement in erection quality while taking the Viagra. It’s important to start this “re-learning” process with the pump as soon as you can. It’s a “use it or lose it” situation according to the rep; the longer you go without erection the harder it is to get it back. By in effect forcing an erection with the pump you retrain your blood vessels.
The second use is for intercourse itself: you pump up to full erection and then release a rubber ring at the base of the penis that maintains the erection. You only do this after two weeks of daily “training” sessions. It’s a bit awkward at first, but it really does work. You can stay hard for up to a half hour, even after orgasm, and “reload” at any time. When used with Viagra it got me about as close to the “old me” as I can get.
These days I still use it regularly in both ways, and I find myself using it for intercourse only about half the time, the other half being a natural erection, usually with Viagra or Levitra. Now I seldom use both the pump and the drug - one or the other almost always works. It’s not like it used to be 100%, but it is good and getting better. There are a few additional details that I would be happy to share with you privately if you so desire.
Good luck, and I hope this info helps.
    Best,
    Frank
